Fashion activism with Extinction Rebellion

Last night proved exactly why we named our event series ‘FashMash Pioneers’, as we were joined by Clare Farrell of Extinction Rebellion, a true force to be reckoned with.

Clare Farrell is one of the co-founders of decentralised activism group, Extinction Rebellion, and with it in equal parts knowledgeable and passionate about exactly what it is that needs to change.

Joining us for FashMash Pioneers, hosted at Sea Containers House, courtesy of Wavemaker, we quizzed her on everything from the shifts the fashion industry needs to make, to the role each of us as individuals can play.

Here are some of our favourite quotes:

ON WHAT’S AT STAKE ⁣

“The people who ignore this crisis are going to go bust. We don’t know when, but you don’t need certainty of prediction to know you’re at risk.” ⁣

ON CANCELLING FASHION WEEK ⁣

“It has to change. It’s a cultural event… it has massive control on people, it gets people to make crazy decisions. People could be using that for the greater good. The system is f*cked, the industry is awash with disposable practice.” ⁣

ON LOBBYING ⁣

“There is an irrelevance to the existing sustainability narrative when it comes to the top. If CEOs really wanted change to take place, they should be lobbying for legislation. We need political mobilisation and they’re in the position to drive it.” ⁣

ON INDIVIDUAL ACTIVISM ⁣

“We’re living through a moment of social change. Things are moving. Recognising the moment of collective consciousness is valuable. People are ready for it, we shouldn’t miss that opportunity. Everyone needs to face up to the responsibility of now. Will you look back and think you did everything you could with the resources you have?”⁣

ON ENGAGING WITH XR⁣

“The door is always open. We are always deeply respectful and doing everything with love and compassion. Collectively we need to go there together.”⁣
